Ive worked on and around the reservation for years. If you take a look at 90% of the houses and yards you will see that keeping the environment pristine is not a huge concern to most.

Perhaps you are looking too closely in too few areas. Most reservations have troubled areas, like most american city ghettos. then these little areas are surrounded by a wealth of beauty - our American city ghettos are surrounded by a ring of ugly suburbs, followed by another ring of ugly suburbs followed by a few superhighways going nowhere, past large multinationally owned mega-farms. I think there is far more beauty on a reservation - and I've lived on or near several - than most other parts of America.

I expect that, as usual, a thoroughly scientific, logical dissertation on the topic of the proposed open pit iron mine will be followed by illiterate, off topic comments; and sensible, sane replies to those comments. The real question here is WHY? Why is this harebrained, financially untenable project being bandied about? I can only conclude that it is in somebody's interest to divide and conquer us all by escalating racial tension here in the Northland. Walker needs a scapegoat when his jobs agenda fails. Blame them Indians. It's an easy sell when put to people in right wing circles.

Dear Rob, do you have a clue how offensive your comment is? This is possibly the best, most informative article that I have read on this subject, and I have read everything I can get my hands on. I moved to this state because I grew up close to the Calumet river in Illinois. If you anyone that has ever been there, you know that it almost glows in the dark it is so incredibly polluted. I am sorry to see WI will be going the same direction. What a shame.

Dear John LaForge, I am writing in regard to the article you wrote, "Inhuman Radiation Experiments", April 11, 20-13 Duluth Reader. Please accept my highest respect for your article and content. After reading your article I would like to share my own experience which happened to me in 1947 or 1948 in Herzogenrath Germany (a small city on the Holland/Belgium/German border. I was born in 1939 and after the war I attended a public school in Herzogenrath. When I was either 7 or 8 yrs old one day soldiers and civilians wearing long gray lab coats came in our classroom and every child was given a yellowish/golden medalion on a string which was hung round our neck. We were told we were to have this medalion touching on our skin. This medalion was about the size of a quarter. I do not remember how long we were to have those around our neck. Within a day or two later the same people came back and collected all the medalions due to the commotion in the community about what these medalions were and what the purpose of these medalions were. All the parents, teachers and residence objected to these medalions. These medalions glowed in the dark and this made everyone very uncomfortable and nervous. My mom told us that the medalions had the same glow as the markings on the face of a wristwatch.

At that time we got food rations from the American Military and these are the same jeeps that brought the people with the medalions. Please bear with me these are memories still in my head from my childhood, I am now 74 yrs old.

Today I believe very strong that those medalions were also "test objects for radiation exposure" In the mid 90's after reading an article on radiation exposure on civilians during the 40's and 50's, I wrote my own exprience to the then responsible dept. The answer I got is that "we do not comment on such expriements on foreign soil". With this I would like to point out that the Scientists didn't confine their radition testing to American soil only, we kids were a great target. We depended on the Americans for food and support.

I didn't see any mention of American scientist doing radiation testing on us children outside of this country. I have lived in this beautiful country for 36 years, Germany did many wrong things but the US also has something they would like to hide.

Have you written about the connection between lead gasoline and crime also as with the Mother Jones article a few months ago. Most insightful.

For people who do not believe in the spirit world I had to post this about Doug. I served in the Navy with Doug in San Diego stationed at a Marine
base. We took care of the recruits dental needs,we were dental technicians.
Doug was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. We lost touch when
we got our orders,I went to VietNam DaNang and Doug was leaving the Navy. It is now May 13, 2013 and as I was sitting here, this overwhelming desire to look up Doug came over me. It was so sad to see he had passed away and to see him sitting in his Austin Healy, the one he used to let me use at any time
just hit me so hard. I have a picture of myself sitting in that same position in that car. I feel Doug wanted to let me know he had passed for there was no other way I could have known.I live in Florida. I have been contacted three times by people who have passed, the first was when I was 13 years old. Yes, I know first hand there is a spirit world and I'm sure Doug is at peace . R.I.P. Thought I would add thisone footnote.I was sitting on the couch with our dog Buzz telling him how much we miss our dog Bob . As you may know,he lost his battle with cancer last week.

I agree, we should review historical evidence. That is consistent with the definition of good science. It’s weird that you say that, then go on to say studies are “pseudo-science”, yet you point to none of them and provide no explanation of that claim. You barely mention the science that has gone on since 1950. You don’t even say what exactly the health problems are. Instead you make loose connections to other fluoridate compounds and talk about their toxic affects. That fluoride is contained within Prozac has nothing to do with it being in our water. I’m pretty sure you know this.

What is your goal? What are you really trying to accomplish? You have a weekly space to discuss issues of public safety and you use it for this?

Thanks for the excellent article and I completely agree with the sentiments. We need to take back control of our water and land from people that only see $$.

We ran the marathon yesterday and picked up a copy of the Reader on Sunday while checking out Canal Park Brewwery. Loved th article. It made us laugh. So true, thanks!

THINGS THAT SUCK: people's prejudices about certain animals, like seagulls. Why are they here? Because people are slobs and leave garbage laying around that attracts scavengers (who have as much right to be here as we do). Seagulls are not nearly as messy and greedy as the people who eat fast-foods and throw their trash around. Seagulls are just trying to fill their bellies, just like every living creature does, but probably not overeating like most fat Americans do.
