Ahh, you had to bring politics into this eh? Well I knew you were right-wing because you're willing to jump straight to killing a dog, when there are plenty of non-lethal ways to deal with them. Chase with a broom, pepper spray, taser, shoot up in the air to scare them off. You try those first, and usually they'll work. Only if the dog is attacking humans or somehow ignoring all other efforts, would you then have the right to shoot it.

So excuuuuse us 'liberals' for actually WANTING personal responsibility in the form of trying peaceful options before resorting to deadly force. We're not the badguys when we're the ones trying to be less bloodthirsty.

If the dog had INDEED massacred a huge number of chickens by then, then by all means he would've had the right to shoot him. But then, he'd have told the family when they came asking around, and pointed to a very visible yard-full of feathers and carcasses and demanded compensation. That didn't happen. So all we have evidence of is a shot dog which was buried and hidden, a sign of guilt, of the guy knowing he did something WRONG.

We're just going on the facts and evidence here. What else would that honestly look like, if you actually think about it, if it was your dog?

Or, especially since it's a dog-friendly island and this has supposedly happened to him before... How about he keep his chickens in a fenced enclosure like you're supposed to do in the first place? Considering the dog bait was being 'enjoyed' by predatory wild life, if he really cared about his chickens, he'd be protecting them with a fence.

But no, he let them stay loose, even though dogs can get loose by accident, even though he claims he lost some before (dubious, no evidence then nor now). That almost looks like he's inviting trouble. That he's willing to even sacrifice chickens just so he has an excuse to shoot people's dogs.

He can protect his chickens with fences, he can scare off dogs by shooting into the air first, or get pepper spray or a taser or even just a broom. Deadly force should be a last resort. Protecting means protecting, not jumping straight to killing without first exhausting other options.

Keep all the livestock you want, folks. Just engage in proper animal husbandry which includes a spacious high-walled pen to keep them safe.

Considering this supposedly happened before, you'd think this guy would've been smart enough to, oh I don't know... fence in his chickens? Keep them in a pen? Especially if it's a dog-friendly island, of COURSE some of them might accidentally get loose from time to time. So if you're gonna live in such a place, it's only logical that just as people try to keep their dogs leashed/chained/fenced in... he should've done the same with his chickens. It's already irresponsible to let them run around loose when there's wildlife who might prey on them, let alone an island full of dogs coming and going.

And the family reported only hearing one single shot. If this man had any common sense or empathy, he'd have put the first shot into the air in an attempt to scare the dog away first. That usually will work. Snap the dog out of its supposed killing spree and send it fleeing in fear. There's also yelling, chasing it with a broom, kicking it, pepper spray, tasers, etc. You absolutely DO NOT have to resort to immediately killing it!

I love chickens, having grown up on a farm full of them, and if he did indeed lose any, then that is tragic. But just as he insists dogs should be contained, so should his chickens if he really cared about them. And he darn well didn't behave like a person who could have easily pointed to a yardfull of bloody feathers and say, "I'm sorry, but look what your dog did. I did my best to stop him, so I had no choice. Here's his body." When the family went around asking about their dog, they would've SEEN the carnage, and he would've had an immediate and open opportunity to let them know what had happened and seek compensation for his losses.

But he didn't. And the only reason that could possibly be is that it wasn't true. That he shot the dog out of mere spite at the sight of it, didn't care enough to scare it off so just shot it, then buried it so he could put off getting into trouble. Didn't care about the family, or all the hardworking heroes who invested so much time and effort and worry into finding Bruzzo.

Until his ego got the better of him and he just had to start bragging more and more. So he could paint himself as the victim and revel in the attacks he brought onto himself, giving him the excuse to whine "woe is me!"

The cops are wrapped around his finger; all the evidence was on the family's side, none on this angry guy's side, and he'd have dead dog remains in his yard as well as the crime of lying to authorities during an investigation. Ridiculous. He's tainting a beautiful island full of such awesome, kind, caring people. And I'll bet he'll never fence in his chickens, because he's inviting this to happen yet again.

They're contained in his yard. The mental gymnastics you guys go thru to defend this dog owner are stunning. Keep trying the re-frame and ignore responsibility.

He doesn't have to, folkies, it's your RESPONSIBILITY to control your animal.

How often do you hear stories of property being defended by waving a broom at the predator?

First they value "free-range chickens" and demand the products in the market place. Now they are demanding confined penned up chickens...

I wonder if they have ever considered what dogs eat and how instincts are still in pet dogs to hunt. How many dog/cat owners out there have had the family pet bring home a dead bird before? While living in the country it happened a few times. Some dogs like stalking/hunting song birds & fowl. Even with a house cat in a urban setting it happened a few times.

I wonder western/gangsta movies would have been like if everyone was only armed with brooms...

Legally a person who owns livestock does not have to put themselves in danger by going after a predator animal with a broom. Due to a dog owners irresponsibility you want a human to put their physicial well-being in harms way for the dogs sake?
Good luck changing the laws too. Would the island benefit by being disarming the citizens and limiting them to only having brooms for defense?

The dog was in the house. Owners were going in and out packing up their car getting ready to leave. One of the trips to the car the dog darted out of the house. The fact that 'some' people are condemning owners for this dog not having a leash on the dog is laughable, who keeps their dog on a leash in the home?

It makes me sad when I read about how our country is being turned into a fascist dictocracy. I can't wait until HIllary is elected, and I can have my free stuff that we take from the rich people.

I have read Phil's illuminating article and have determined that the Republicans are bad and the Socialists are good. I like free stuff. I will be driving a van taking people from Wisconsin to Minnesota and back to Wisconsin and then back to Minnesota and finally back home so we can get all our votes in.
