One correction on your point, Islander, I don't believe he needs to wait for a chicken to die. The animal simply needs to be an immediate threat to his livestock. That's clearly a dog that could be an immediate threat to chickens.

I don't know who you are. Apparently you wish to remain anonymous. I am Harry Welty. I am a liberal in many respects as was my hero Abe Lincoln. I did smoke some weed when I was in college. And yes, I was worried for a while that this might cloud my thinking. Despite that concern, which I've since realized was overblown, I do not hide who I am. I live at 2101 E 4th Street in Duluth Minnesota. I have written hundred's of thousands of words in my blog and tens of thousands for the Reader. I put my name to them. Juan, the common-sense man, apparently doesn't consider proof of dead chickens necessary to justify executing somebody's dog. This whole issue seems to be a debate between those who think any loose dog deserves the death sentence, and those who don't. I grew up with people like this, and it's just cold, man. They like to kill things first and justify later.

Why don't they just admit they like to kill things? Because that's what it comes down to.

Mr. Nelson was able to take a picture of a live chicken and send it to the Ashland Daily Press. Mysteriously, however, he was unable to take any pictures of the 13 dead chickens. But the cold people of the world just don't care: The dog deserved to die, because it was loose and a human decided to shoot it. That's it. End of story.

Just curious - For those of you who have no problems with dogs wandering unleashed - have you ever been attacked by a dog? I mean when you're on a road, not trespassing? On a bike or running? It's terrifying. Stray dogs are no joke. So yeah, keep your damn dog on a leash or get it trained.

Cold. That's what I'm saying. It's a debate between cold people and other people. So many people enjoy killing things in this world, but I have yet to hear anybody admit it. There are always "reasons" for killing, but no proof.

The alleged victim kept his trap shut for two and a half months, while he watched the community searching. I can see Juan Percent standing right next to him, snickering.

Just horrible. Not only did he murder their dog, but he put this family through hell for almost 3 months as they searched for him - agonizing every day. He needs to be punished.

Livestock are domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and commodities such as meat, eggs, milk, fur, leather, and wool.

It is with a man who reacts to a self made tragedy by killing an animal.
Where is the justification for that. Someone has to grab this guy by the scruff of his neck and say to him...you can't do this anymore. You need to protect your chickens better. Then you need to find out who owned that dog. Then you need to call a David Hyde or whoever is the animal control agent.

So to clarify your position as, I presume, someone who lives on the island year around, would you prefer tourists find other places to visit?

There is no evidence that this dog was any kind of threat. Are you also afraid of your shadow?
