I just saw this movie for the first time yesterday. And it saddens me how the black community would put a stigma on mental illness. Her mother knew something was wrong especially with her blackout spells as a child. And she knew how fragile she was as a little girl. I get that she tried to remind Frankie her place in society during that time. But her mother rooted the mental break in Frankie way before the death of Mr. Pete and losing baby Alice. I say losing because I too don't want to believe with the relationship they had she actually killed her granddaughter. Yes the baby stop crying but then moved. I think Frankie saw what she thought her mother wanted her to see. That in society certain aspects of life were not acceptable. Plus in the end the young lady (stripper) did seem as if she could have been Alice.
