Harry - there is a major philosophical difference that separates you from modern republicans. The government is not the answer to your problems. You have that responsibility. How can you even consider yourself to be conservative?

please look at the screenshot image in this article, "our" councilors looking at their screens, hiding, trying to ignore a harsh reality here in Duluth, and ignoring their human/constituent peers.. watch the link to school board violating first amendment rights!!! i thought i maybe wanted to try and have respect for councilor fosle- but i just can't tell anymore- most Duluthians seem to be either tricked, purgatoried, bought off, or complicit w/ the mayor and her husbands' crew of minneapolis developer cronies. they give her an op-ed in DNT last week and she cites her husbands' health and other "stressors" as why everyone in town should just move on and not look at her agenda in detail... sorry Emily youre a public leader and you can't just hide behind your kins' HIPPA act.... its truly sickening to those who are actually (even marginally) paying attention!!!! i and others have written her multiple times with only curt and fascist replys(msg being: if you aren't on board with her agenda, MOVE OUT or stop writing). what a poorly-chosen time to stand down, Duluth... and what a great time to STAND UP FOR THE TOWN YOU ONCE ENJOYED !!!!! stand up or watch it all turn into a "human settlement zone" as per Agenda 21, for real

It amazes me that any American can defend these mob tactics. Trying to shut down a public meeting is not a protected First Amendment right. The protesters were completely out of line. Maybe they missed their nap time and were cranky.

Ugh. So masked protesters barge into the city councilors' place of work, hollering like maniacs, trying to prevent anyone else from expressing themselves, and you're mad that the councilors are looking at their computers? Nice priorities.

It looks like Mr. Martell was RIGHT several times. But moving an audience to "Take Action," might require some penny PINCHING.

For instance, how much will the RED DISTRICT need after 2, 5, and 10 years at current population& funding levels along with student enrollment trends? What might "action" look like?

Providing meeting minutes with historical fist-a-cuffs is useful (and disturbing) but unlikely to gain the kind of following necessary to move this NEEDLING ten year trajectory to resolution.

Try showing this "family-focused" city (and state) the truth (or pain) predictions without the quibbling bits for (straggler) sheep.

Ethnicities aside, even the "informed" journalists in duluth overlook the simple exercise of thinking about what its like to be part of an oppressed people who are not given a meaningful voice or forum, whose city rep's have NO way of relating with them, and are stuck in a downtown without much opportunity.. the fact that they felt this to be an appropriate voicing of their grievances should help you fill in the blanks about where these folks are coming from and the helplessness they must feel when Mayor Emily or sidekicks come to "listen" to them and their opinions... i dont know, maybe the next set of new high rise condos will make them feel more well represented.. meantime, please keep up the high quality reporting- i really do appreciate the topics you cover in your articles

I’m well aware of the sad story of Chief Buffalo. Nevertheless, I don’t buy the argument that the protesters were so confused and oppressed by the dominant culture that they had no choice but to make up their own rules. Honor the Earth is not a confused or oppressed organization. They’re strong-minded and well-funded (the exec director, Winona LaDuke, makes over 150K a year), and they understand the ins and outs of the democratic process better than most people. That’s how they knew exactly when and where to show up to stop it. So it’s not that they don’t understand the process; it’s that they believe they’re more important than other people. That kind of attitude in the public sphere is something I have always opposed, and always will oppose, no matter who’s guilty of it.

I will also note that the protesters were not exactly speaking for all Native Americans. On social media, I saw many local Natives complaining about national agitators who parachute in for a day and rile things up. They felt it damaged the more long-term goals they were pursuing. It’s also worth mentioning that both Native Americans on the Council—Jay Fosle and Renee Van Nett—voted in favor of the riot gear. Are we just going to not count them as “true” Natives, or what?

In the end, what I saw was not a brave stand against a ruthless enemy by an oppressed minority, but a bunch of sore losers refusing to accept a vote. Most likely, we’ll see them again. They’ve tasted blood at the Duluth City Council twice now, and I think they enjoy it.

There's a typo in the first sentence of this piece: "In the Treaty of 1854 treaty signed at La Pointe, Chief Buffalo reserved a one-mile square piece of land. He chose a section of land that may have been intended to incldue the Indigenous burial ground at Rice’s Point, though that site was not included in any of the various versions of the reservations boundaries" why would anyone think it was fact checked, when the author didn't bother to spell check?

I think John's piece is factual and good reporting. Is it the reporter's job to direct the public on what to do, I think not. That's the publics job along with their elected officials.
I was fooled into voting for a candidate this last time so if I do not see any change in her positions I will work to help someone else fill her shoes next time. I also feel that we need to stop rewarding poor behavior. The school board and administration use the kids as a red herring to get money in their hands and then miss manage it. The Red Plan is here to stay and so the carpet has this super large bulge in it until someone is willing to rip the carpet of it and expose what's causing the pain. Just like AA, if you never admit you have a problem and you are it you can never fix it.

We’re probably worn food after we die... shh, don’t tell the kids, people who develop the ability to think in shades of gray generally don’t do so until they’re adults. Kids in their 20s are still incapable of seeing that their actions have consequences. Does a just God care about developmental psychology? Probably not. He’s probably not just anyway.
