House districts are determined by population. There is some gerrymandering but when state & federal policies depopulate the rural areas, you are left w/ a marginalized population that no one sticks up for & they just want to stick it to the people in charge.

I'm less concerned about house districts than local politics. The culture in Duluth does not reflect the culture of the rest of St. Louis county, yet they have a large population and call the shots. County government matters for taxes and funding. Duluth thinks it's San Francisco, and can afford San Francisco liberalism. The rest of the county, not so much.

I think the DPD has found a new revenue stream. They could victimize the tourists who carry illicit drugs, confiscate their vehicles and any cash, then auctioning them off. The city could then give that money to the poor. Win/Win.

Yes, a slight mention. But in the action plan there was nothing about doing any repairs to it. I don't think most people even know about the change in plans. I attended the community meeting and it was very poorly attended, maybe a dozen people. When I asked if it would be having further info meetings, bringing it to parks commission or council due to the significant changes, they also said they didn't attend to. I don't blame you for letting it go. It happens so often, it is exhausting.

Thank you Gary for continuing to provide the real history behind so many of our American myths. Knowing history should always guide us in how we act in the present and for the future. Some arguments focus on "well what are we supposed to do now", or "give back your land if you care so much", or "they should just get over it". Acting in the present and for the future means that we use the word genocide to describe what happened to the Native people and we own up to that fact as a nation. One piece of acting in the present and for the future would be If local, state, or national legislators wanted to pass a law for the restitution of Native people I would support it because I have known that this was a genocide carried out against them.

I've flown 25,000 hours in an almost 50 year flying career. Airlines, military , private and corporate. Never found the "chem trail" switch. Must have missed that in school.

Small Pox wiped out 90 percent (or more) of the Native Americans, not just one village. Prior to the Small Pox epidemic, all attempts to colonize "America" failed. The number if Natives was too large. Turns out those Wampanoag ENGAGED the pilgrims because they wanted PROTECTION from the natives living to their west. They were afraid of being wiped out. The reason? Genocide between tribes was a common occurrence before and after Europeans showed up, possibly because culturally, the natives had no conception of the individual having any value. Gary wants to hearken back to the antiquated view of the noble savage. The noble save that never existed.

One thing I would point out is the hypocrisy of the News Tribune. They told the voter's before the election not to vote for the referenda because the Board and Superintendent couldn't be trusted to wisely spend even more of our tax dollars. This is the same DNT that endorsed nearly every one of the Board members a short year ago. These members were unabashed Gronseth boosters. I did in fact point this out in a letter to the editor of the DNT. Unlike my previous letters, this one was approved as written, and I received a call to confirm I had written it. I was surprised Mr Frederick didn't attempt to rewrite it. Then my surprise turned to enlightenment when they never printed the letter or published it online!

The comment from the DNT of "Just consider a few headlines from this past year...". Duh. Who do you think wrote those headlines? They never write anything good. There are lots and lots of great things happening at the distrct, but they are rarely publicized. Maybe you could do a better job of "reporting" good things, too, although I guess this is just an opinion article. You never research anything good - always look for the bad in things that happened 10-15 years ago with people that are no longer here. Maybe, just maybe, the new people actually have a good plan, but you will never be able to accept that. What would you write about!

I agree with Reptevia. In the book I've been working on, while writing these articles, I wrote: "Actually, I had one more criticism I held back on: I thought it was disingenuous for the paper to point a condemning finger without acknowledging its own culpability in the mess."

As for Exhausted, he/she exhausts me. There may be “new faces” in the boardroom, but it is still the same group, handing off the baton of power. Mr. Gronseth was Mr. Dixon's assistant and the DFL-endorsed have had majority vote for several years.

To defend the DNT, the district, in effect, wrote those headlines. To defend Exhausted, he/she is correct: there are people in the trenches of ISD 709 making heroic efforts to educate our community's children. They are doing some great things. It's a pity they've been so poorly led.
