My understanding is the only portion of the temple opera block that Sherman companies would gift back is the norshor theater. The remaining portion of the block would remain a Sherman company asset.The theater is the risk and exposure of the project. Has that changed?

Early on (three or four years ago), one of the plans that was floated called for Sherman to take ownership of both the NorShor and Temple Opera Building. Today, the Temple Opera is not included in the plan; DEDA still owns it, Oneida Realty manages it, and nobody is planning to sell it to Sherman. On Nov. 9, Dave Montgomery told me that DEDA was taking a wait-and-see approach with the Temple Opera. They would wait until the NorShor was refurbished, and then take a fresh look at the Temple Opera to see if there's anything they can do with it that might tie into the revitalized arts district.

I don't recall hearing anything yet again at the January City Council meeting regarding this. Is this in jeopardy of falling through? I'm excited about the project but it doesn't feel like there is much in the way of follow through on each monthly promise of completion and then it seems like no one even asks the question during the council meeting this month...

Well, before the agreement comes to the council it has to go through DEDA. That's where the holdup is happening. These delays have been going on for the life of the project (that is to say, for at least three years), but 2015 was notable because they happened practically every month. Because all of the public sources of financing are in place, my suspicion is that Sherman is balking at coming up with his portion. I fear that the city will be asked to contribute more and more, a la the Great Lakes Aquarium and Spirit Mountain, but that's just speculation at this point.

But it is my understanding that DEDA did approve the resolution to accept the deed grant on December 7th:

They did. The DEED grant is part of the public financing I mentioned. That's in hand. The part that's not in hand is Sherman's $7 million.
