Gary. I have a word or 2 for you re WW2 and your articles, many of which I have read. The thing is this.
1. we got into the 'war' on a ruse, since the DC brass knew we had broken the Jap codes well b4 Pearl harbor. Stationing the fleet 'out there' was a threat to Japan and IMHO FDR knew it, hoping they would attack. There was no code breaking machine at Hawaii so the commanders there had to depend upon info stuff from DC and all they got was A. denial of requested fighters and AA guns (to protect the fleet) and B. orders to "guard against sabotage".
They never were informed that a Jap fleet was sailing towards Hawaii by 11/27 or so. DC knew where their fleet was at all times..even to the point of sending a USN destroyer to Fr Frigate Shoals to prevent the Jap anphibian patrol planes from being refueled by their submarine..[so they could NOT over fly Pearl] ...to see that we had ordered the 3 US carriers to be OUT of port on 12/67!! Yeah...acc to testimony later, the attack was not supposed to even happen IF the 3 carriers were gone!

Ok, a relative of mine, deceased 30 years now, was a USAAF Col out in the Pacific for 3 years..at one point he was even stationed at Guam for awhile. Mostly he was a Flight Surgeon for a B-17 group. In May 1942 his pilots began coming to him crying w rage and frustration. They had just received orders..making all 3 big OIL REFINERIES in the FAR EAST "off limits" to US bombing ..those three refineries had (somehow) been captured INTACT by the Japs between 12/7/41 and May 1942: BP and SHELL @ Singapore and ESSO up at Hanoi (then Fr Indochina). The pilots told the Col that they "could end this war in 6 weeks" if only they could be allowed to BOMB those 3 refineries and ..shut off the nips gasoline supplies.." He told me that as far as he knew, the 3 refineries were kept off limits all during the 'war', while our sons slogged up all those pacific islands..losing 10s of 1000s. That same ESSO refinery was STILL off limits all during Vietnaam 'war'..we were told it was bks the Russians would get pissed off if we bombed Hanoi, right? naah..we were getting alot of our gas from it..up til 1972. Great reporting on the library! One has to wonder why the Duluth News Tribune does not have the same level of inquiry.
I saw something similar happen in Seattle around 2000; the wonderful, human scaled main library was torn down to make way for a flashy but ultimately failed attempt at creating something new.
