Two Essays from the Past: On the 10th Anniversary of the Strange Death of Paul Wellstone

Fri. Oct. 26th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

October 25th, a week and a half before 2012s election day, is the 10th anniversary of the death of Paul Wellstone. A number of commemorative events occurred during the week, but sadly, the loss of this courageous patriot will soon be forgotten by voters who should care enormously that his death was very likely, ac

So if 47% of Americans will never vote for Romney, who among the 53% are the ones who will never vote for Obama?

Fri. Nov. 2nd, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

As Mitt Romney so scandalously was recorded as saying to a bunch of his multibillionaire supporters/bribers/campaign investors (in his attempts to take over the Oval Office), 47% of American voters will never vote for him because of

Elections Over: What Should We Have Learned, and What Should We Do Next Time?

Mon. Nov. 12th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

This weeks column is being written in the closing throes of the most propagandistic, most costly, most wasteful, nastiest election of all time, bar none. And it is obvious to me that most of the venom and untruths have been coming from (often anonymous) right-wing political or religious groups or the likes of cunning political operatives and/or moneyed billiona

11/9 and 9/11: And We Thought We Were Free

Fri. Nov. 16th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

Seventy-four years ago this week, on 11/9/38, the horrifying event occurred that the Nazi Party called Krystallnacht. It could be said that the events of that night represented the official start of Adolf Hitlers endless war against the Jews, but the methods used to justify that war were not an aberration.

The National Day of Mourning (a.k.a. Thanksgiving Day) Falls on Nov. 22 This Year, but It Has Nothing To Do with JFKs Assassination

Mon. Nov. 26th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

Since 1970, Native Americans have gathered at noon on Coles Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native Americans do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims and other European settlers. To them, Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of their people, the theft of their lands, and the relentless assault on their culture. Participants in a National Day of Mourning hon

Unconditional Obedience to Authority, Cruelty in Child-Rearing and the Commandant of Auschwitz

Fri. Nov. 30th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

A couple of years ago, the iconic gate to the infamous World War II-era extermination camp at Auschwitz was stolen. As far as I know, the crime has not been solved. At the top of that gate was this classic bit of Nazi propaganda, proclaimed to the millions of doomed incoming victims: Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Makes One Fre

Pearl Harbor, the Day of Infamy and FDR If Work Wont set us Free, Will Truth do the Job?

Fri. Dec. 7th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

This is the week that the corporate media, careful to not upset the uber-patriots and nationalists among us, will be featuring reports about the December 7, 1941 Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition to hearing stories about those beginnings of WWII (at least for the US), we may also be hearing reports

The First Casualty of War is Truth; Gallipoli, the ANZAC Spirit Myth and Waltzing Matilda

Thu. Dec. 13th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

Were not made by God to mass kill one another, and thats backed up by the Gospels. Lying and war are always associated. Pay attention to the war-makers when they try to defend their current war. If theyre moving their lips theyre lying. -- quote from Catholic Worker ex-priest and antiwar activist, the late Philip Berri

The Massacre at Sandy Hook and the Elephant in the Room

Fri. Dec. 28th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

Since the most recent American school shooting-of-the-month that occurred on 12-14-12, thousands of aware mental health professionals, psychiatric survivors, and victims of drug-induced violence have been watching and listening in vain for any of the major TV or radio networks to even breathe a single word about the likely possibility that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter (widely identified as having had a very

Unlearned Lessons from World War I: the Christmas Truce of 1914

Sun. Dec. 30th, 2012 | Gary G. Kohls, MD

In World War I, as happens to be true in most wars, the Christian church leadership joined in the patriotic fervor with very un-Christlike, nationalistic, and racial/religious superiority stances. Astonishingly, religious leaders on every side of the conflict truly believed that God was on their particular side. And so
