One of the many things I enjoyed about being a parent of small children was discovering the worlds contained within the pages of children’s books, and having as much fun as the kids reading the words and enjoying the illustrations.

I was reminded of my love for children’s literature when a copy of the new book Northwoods Lullaby from the University of Minnesota Press landed in my mailbox.

It reads like a song, and, so, I was not surprised to read in the press release that accompanied the book that award-wining children’s author Mary Casanova, who lives in a cabin near Voyageurs National Park, says the book was borne of a melody she hummed while rocking her newborn grandbaby to sleep.

Casanova’s lyrical setting was then turned into a walk of springtime discovery through the lovely collage illustrations by Jordan Sundberg, of Tin Cup Design (tincupdesignco.com) here in Duluth.

An adult and child stroll through the awakening spring wilderness, encountering both flora and fauna, as well as the sweet rhythm of life in their stroll through the cedar-scented forest.

International Falls author Mary Casanova and Duluth illustrator Jordan Sundberg will celebrate the publication of their new children's picture book with two events in Duluth.
