St. Urho’s Celebration

St. Urho is a fictional saint of Finland created in Northern Minnesota in 1956. Originally in May, the date was changed to March 16 to start drinking beer a day before the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Events include live music, food, kid activities, a beauty contest, parade and fireworks.

Based on a 1960 novella, the musical opened on Broadway in 2005 to much acclaim, winning six Tony Awards. American tourist Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara as they take in the wonders of Italy and a fateful gust of wind whisks Clara’s hat into the hands of Fabrizio, causing amore at first sight.

Irish-American singer-songwriter Teague Alexy brings back an all star cast of Duluth musicians – Clancy Ward, Jacob and Owen Mahon and Sarah Cagley – for the second annual St. Patty’s at The Caddy, playing traditional Irish songs. With sea-shanty troubadour John Agacki.

36-Hour Songwriting Festival
Saturday, March 15, 6 pm
Wussow’s
Local musicians in this annual event sign up to have a topic sent to them and then have 36 hours to write a song based on or around said topic. This is the night the songs are performed live. Hosted by Ryan Lane.

Loaves & Fishes Annual Ceili Fundraiser

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Duluth
Family-friendly event with dance instruction to raise money for Duluth’s Catholic Worker community, founded in 1989 by Steve O’Neil and Angie Miller, who opened their family home on Jefferson Street to war refugees and the homeless.

In the ‘80s, Osborn’s commander in U.S. Air Force Band ordered him to learn double bass, the lowest-pitched instrument in the orchestra, and by the ‘90s he was playing it on PDQ Bach’s Grammy-winning album. With Ed Willett on cello.
