Dumb politicians Series #22

Egg on his face
JD Vance was caught lying about the economy and now has egg on his face. In a campaign ad he blames the the high cost of eggs on Kamala Harris. He says Harris is responsible for $4 dollar a dozen eggs while standing in front of a sign advertising eggs at $2.99 per dozen.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of eggs did spike in January 2023 to an average of $4.82 per dozen. But the reason for the high prices was not political. The  reason was that in 2022 there was an outbreak of avian influenza. The outbreak, which was the largest in U.S. history, killed 52.7 million chickens. This created a huge shortage of eggs and increased the price of eggs.

One would think JD, a Harvard Law School graduate, would at least know basic supply and demand economics. But truth, honestly or rational public policy are not the objective. Lying,  and blaming Democrats for things they have no control over is much more politically useful.

Lying about crime
Republican politicians (Trump, Tiffany, Stauber et. al) constantly rant about crime. According to them crime is rampant and Americans can’t leave the house without being mugged, robbed, raped or murdered. The latest scapegoats are immigrants illegally crossing the border to allegedly wreak havoc on major American cities.

But there is no epidemic of crime. In fact, violent crime has been declining for years. New FBI statistics provide the data. Violent crime fell 3% in 2023, while murder and manslaughter declined by 11.6%. There was an upward blip during COVID but violent crime rates are now at pre-pandemic levels when Trump was in office.

The truth is the vast majority of Americans live in very safe neighborhoods and have a very small chance of being a victim of crime. But whipping up hysteria about crime is a standard – and very successful – Republican campaign tactic.

Voting for Republican legislators is a vote against public schools
According to a recent Up North News article there are 93 Republicans running for Wisconsin’s Senate and Assembly. Up North News says the Nov. 5 election can be viewed as a contest between “...Republican legislators on one side and Wisconsin public education on the other – and if one side wins, the other loses.”

Up North News reminds us that, “Republican legislators have a well-documented history of attacking public education in an effort to have taxpayers fund a second parallel school system in the state – made up of mostly religious, private schools that have less transparency, less accountabilit, and no record of performing better than public schools.”

As a result of state funding cuts (and unfair funding allocation rules) local school districts are forced to seek “a never-ending parade of local referendums” to raise local property taxes and stay financially afloat. Although local public school advocates are winning many of these referendums, it is a stupid way to manage our essential public school systems.

It would be easier and better to just not elect anti-education Republicans.

Stauber: ‘Nobody’s perfect’
It is time for the people of this region to realize partisan hack/Trump brown-noser Pete Stauber is too dumb to be their representative in the U.S. House. Look at his record. It’s as empty as his head. Besides showing unwavering support for the smelly convicted felon chosen to run for president by the corrupt Republican party, Stauber has done very little for his constituents, except take credit for initiatives he railed and voted against, such as the infrastructure bill that is helping to restore the Blatnik Bridge. He labeled the bill “socialism,” and then tried to take credit for it when a large chunk of money was set aside for the bridge replacement. It appears like his master Trump and many others in the GOP that Stauber has neither spine nor moral compass.

The problem seems to be that Pete just is not too bright. In July he did an interview with Minnesota Public Radio and was asked about his allegiance to Trump. The interviewer put it this way: “He’s been found guilty of 34 felonies. He’s a man who lied about the outcome of the last election. He faces charges related to an insurrection. Do you think he represents the values of Minnesota voters in your district?”

Stauber’s answer? He stole it directly from Joe E. Brown, who delivered the perfect end-of-movie punchline in Some Like It Hot: “Tom, I would tell you that if you’re looking for a perfect candidate, please find one. You know, all of us have flaws. Nobody’s perfect.”

Nobody’s perfect. Wow! What an idiot. Time for this dope to be removed from office so a real adult can legislate for us.
