Free Range Film Festival Fri. & Sat. June 23 & 24, 7 p.m. 909 County Rd. 4, Wrenshall Annual event since 2004 has drawn thousands of film buffs and curiosity seekers to watch independent cinema in the massive hayloft of a barn. A 14’ x 24’ screen and surround-sound round out the film-going experience. Officially free, $10 donation requested.
Midnight Sun Midnight Run Friday, June 23, 11:59 p.m. Endion Station, Canal Park Annual nighttime 5k along Lake Superior to celebrate the arrival of summer, long days and warm nights. Now in its 16th year, the event is always held the Friday after Grandma's Marathon weekend. Registration limited to 350 people.
Rhubarb Festival Saturday, June 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stella Maris Academy Rhubarb pies, brats, crisps, breads, jams, burritos, snow cones … come for the food and stay for the fun, with live music and kids/family activities. Fundraiser for CHUM services for people experiencing homelessness and poverty.
Chicken Hat Plays 20th Anniversary Saturday, June 24, 7:30 p.m. Harbor City International School Theater In May 2003, eight writers, eight directors, and a whole bunch of actors gathered together to create eight world-premiere one-act plays in 24 hours. It was exhausting, exhilarating and something Northland audiences had ever seen before. Since then 311 plays have been created. How about eight more?
Blood Hook Saturday, June 24, 8 p.m. The Park Center, Hayward “You can’t worm your way out!” A maniac is on the loose during the annual Musky Madness fishing competition in this '80s cheese classic, filmed in Hayward. Screening coincidentally (or not) takes place during this year’s festival and includes a movie-related costume contest.
Iron Range Funk Machine Tuesday, June 27, 6 p.m. Olcott Park, Virginia Part of Virginia’s Tuesday evening outdoor summer concert series in Olcott Park through August. IRFM is a dance band that plays funk, soul and classic rock.
Diona Johnson's Birthday/Life Celebration Thursday, June 29 12-4 p.m. Bent Paddle 6 p.m. Park Point Beach House Singer/songwriter, therapist, activist and frontwoman of the band AfroGeode & The Gemstones, who died unexpectedly in April at age 35, is remembered with live music, an album listening session, food, dance, socializing, sunset on the beach and stars.
