COCKTAILING

Paul Whyte

After trying out some great cocktails for the past few weeks in Duluth, for this week’s write up I headed to Superior and stopped in at The Flame on Tower Avenue. It was pretty busy for a bar in Superior on a Sunday with their popular karaoke night that starts at 8 p.m. The Flame often has a DJ, provides a fun dance floor and has a respectable assortment of drinks especially when it comes to their liquors. For Cocktailing suggestions, tell me where to go by emailing info@readerduluth.com.

Featured Bartender: Emily Atwater. Emily has been bartending at The Superior Flame for seven years and occasionally DJs there as well.

Interests & Activities: When asked about her interests outside of work, Emily replied, “science, softball, sex…things that start with ‘S’.”

Favorite Music at the Moment: Die Antwoord, Tom Waits and Fifth Harmony.

Featured Cocktail: This is another unnamed cocktail. The first thing to go in is Dark Honey Seagrams 7, which of course is a flavored whiskey. It is followed by Kinky Gold, a peach and tropical fruit flavored vodka. The drink gets a splash of pineapple juice and sour to finish it off.

How is it?: This drink tastes more like punch than it packs a punch. Whatever taste of whiskey is masked by the blend of citrus flavors with just a little smoothness of the honey flavor coming out. While the drink is certainly sweet, it’s not to the point where the sweetness is over powering. The yellowish-orange beverage has a more natural flavor of sweet over than just being a syrupy explosion of sugary flavoring in the mouth. Overall, if you happen to have some honey flavored whiskey around, this might be a good drink to try out or stop in and have it made for you at The Flame or other well stocked bar.
